“We” are Mike and Mary Johnston. We’ve been married for over 45 years, raised three great kids, and have maintained a great sense of adventure throughout our life together.
Early on we struggled to make ends meet – two 70’s liberal arts majors with no readily marketable skills. But we have been blessed to live our lives in an America that offered great opportunities to anyone willing to work hard. We have worked more jobs than we can count, sometimes more than one at a time, and have learned valuable lessons from each one. Over time we found our niches and built our careers.
We have traveled together to many different places around the world, often exploring them on foot, looking for the unique experiences that are missed by the tour bus traveler. In our travels we have experienced the comfort of hot soup on a damp London afternoon. We have tasted wines at small Tuscan vineyards and eaten ducks roasted in Peking. We have snorkeled among the fish in Hawaii and hiked in the Swiss Alps.
We have walked through Boston, Barcelona, New York and Old Delhi – savoring the unique sights, tastes and smells of each city. Every place we have visited has taught us something, and we have tried to bring that learning back to wherever we call home.
We’re now making a new home in Portugal, beginning in the northern city of Porto. This represents a lifelong dream of ours to live outside the US. We are excited about this new adventure and look forward to sharing our perceptions on the country, the culture, and of course, the food and wine.

Talking with one of our friends and they mentioned your blog and move to Portugal. I retired early and we are looking at possible month long stay in Portugal possibly next year. Would enjoy connecting again as it’s been quite awhile.

Hello! A friend sent me your blog to follow. My husband, Mike and I, are considering retiring to Portugal in a few years time and are currently living in Singapore. There’s actually quite a few friends here in Singapore considering Portugal for retirement so it’s a hot topic amongst us. My husband and I are currently in hotel quarantine as we are returning from Indianapolis. We both grew up in Indy and all of our family still live there. We have that in common!
