This White Rabbit is a complement to the blog post “ETIAS is coming…maybe” that was published on 16 August 2023. There are two sections below:
- A side-by-side comparison of the countries in the European Union, the Schengen Area, and NATO.
- A list of the sources that I consulted while writing the blog post.
Comparing the EU, Schengen Area, and NATO
While doing the research for the the blog post “ETIAS is coming…maybe”, I read a number of different articles and needed a way to illustrate the difference between the countries in the European Union and the countries who are parties to the Schengen Agreement. So I created the table below.
Once it was done I decided to add an additional column to identify which countries were also part of NATO.

North American members of NATO: Canada, United States.
I saw some notes about the reasons why some countries were not included in the EU and the Schengen Area, but have not tried to catalogue them. Some countries intentionally opted in or out of the groups. Others were denied entry for various reasons. Most of the reasons had something to do with politics. (Surprise!)
A byproduct of this exercise was that I now have a much better understanding of the Baltic area – east of Italy, north of Greece.

To me, Mike, it’s a disease! Why is it that some of us kill ourselves trying to accommodate our curiosity? My sister often said while helping with my first computer, “Joy, it doesn’t MATTER how or why it works! Now, shut up and just DO it!”
